Our History
Barnett Cemetery is located five miles east of Elberfeld on County Road 900N and is considered one of the oldest cemeteries in the area. The cemetery sits on land originally donated by Dave Barnett, with additional acreage later contributed by Jasper Greer.
According to a newspaper article published in 1960, the cemetery was already approximately 150 years old at that time. Existing records identify Sarah Barton, a four-year-old child, as being buried there in 1833. Joshua Brammer, who was buried in 1855 at the age of 22, is the earliest recorded adult burial. Mary (Smith) Greer, wife of Richard Greer, was the first documented individual to reach an advanced age. She was laid to rest in 1858 at the age of 71.
While these are the earliest burials confirmed through available records, it is likely that interments took place even earlier. Unfortunately, documentation from those years has not survived to verify them.
